Somali athlete Nasra Ali Abukar, selected because she is the niece of a political appointee, has gone viral
The athleteNasra Ali Abukar ran in 21.81 seconds in a 100-meter sprint at the World University Games being held in Chengdu (China).
The Somali, who has come under heavy criticism on social media after the video went viral, finished the race 10 seconds slower than the rest of her opponents.
The 'Daily Mail' has already described Nasra Ali Abukar's race as "the slowest 100m sprint in history in an international competition".
The Somali press describes Nasra Ali Abukar as an "untrained" athlete with limited racing experience.
Elham Garaad claims that Nasra Ali Abukar is the niece of the vice president of the Somali Athletics Federation, Khadija Adan Dahir, and that her selection for the World University Games was purely due to nepotism.
After the controversy came to light, the Somali Ministry of Sports has decided to suspend Khadija Adan Dahir from her position.
Nepotism is defined as the "inordinate preference given by some to their relatives for public concessions or jobs".
